Orthopedic problems are troublesome, and they can sometimes be life-changing as well. Both traumatic and non-traumatic causes can lead to issues in our musculoskeletal system. What we will discuss in this post is a bone condition that occurs due to a non-traumatic cause i.e., “cancer.”

The condition we are going to talk about is bone metastasis, a cancerous condition that is quite different from bone cancer. Severe cases of these conditions may require surgery to stabilize the affected bones using Orthopaedic Implants.

In this post, we will do a detailed discussion about bone metastasis along with its symptoms and causes.

What is Bone Metastasis?

Bone metastases are nothing but tumors that do not originate from the affected. This is a condition in which cancer cells affecting any other location in the body spread to a bone and start growing there. It is a form of advanced cancer, and any type can metastasize bones. These conditions are hard to treat.

Depending upon the severity, bone metastasis can cause pain and broken bones. Based on the symptoms, the treatment of the condition is decided.

What Are the Symptoms Associated with Bone Metastasis?

According to the reports, bone metastasis can sometimes show no signs and symptoms at all, and such a condition is not so common. Some of the commonest symptoms that may be experienced by people suffering from bone metastasis include:

 • Pain in the bones

 • Fractures

 • Urinary or bowel incontinence

 • Weakness in arms or legs

 • Hypercalcemia: that may be the reason for nausea, constipation, confusion, and vomiting

What Are Causes of Bone Metastasis?

Bone metastasis is a cancerous orthopedic condition in which the tumor does not grow directly on the bone, but it spreads from other locations affected with cancer. Some of the cancers that are commonly known to metastasize bones include:

 • Prostate cancer

 • Breast cancer

 • Thyroid cancer

 • Kidney cancer

 • Lung cancer

While on the other hand, the locations that are known to get affected the most with bone metastasis include:

 • Pelvis

 • Hips

 • Spine

 • Skull

 • Ribs

 • Long bones of the legs

 • Upper arms

How is the Condition Diagnosed?

A detailed medical history check and physical examination are required to make the correct diagnosis of the condition. The healthcare service provider will also discuss any past incidences of cancer.

During the physical examination, the doctor will examine difficulties in using the affected site along with painful areas. While on the other hand, certain imaging tests are also required to get detailed insights into the condition. The tests ordered may include:

 • X-rays

 • Bone scans

 • MRI scans

 • CT scans

 • Blood tests

Sometimes, a biopsy may also be performed.

How Are Bone Metastasis Treated?

The location and severity of bone metastasis decide the best treatment procedure. The commonest procedure performed is radiation therapy. It is done to slow down the growth of bone metastasis. Different types of radiation therapy procedures are there to be selected from.

Besides this, different types of medicines are also prescribed based on the severity and symptoms noticed. The medications that may be prescribed include:

 • Bone-building drugs to reduce bone damage

 • Chemotherapy to destroy tumor cells
