Mechanism Of Flame Arresters Explained

Flame Arresters which are also called arrestor are devices which allow the gases to pass through them but they also stop the flames for preventing larger fire and explosion. There’s a wide variety of the situations wherein the flame arrestors are applied. Anyone who is involved in choosing flame arrestors should understand how they work and the limitations of their performance.

Modern day flame arrestors

The flame arrestors are available in different varieties and used in a number of industries. All these arrestors operate on similar principle. They help in removing heat from flames as they travel through the narrow passage with the metallic walls or the other heat conductive substance. For example, flame arrestor manufactured by most of the manufacturers use layers of metallic ribbons with the crimped corrugations.

The flame arrestors are employed in a number of industries which include pharmaceutical, refining, petrochemical, chemical, paper, pulp, exploration of oil, sewage treatments, mining, landfills, bulk liquid transportation, etc. In some of the cases, flames include exothermic reactions apart from oxidation. The processes that generate reactive or combustible gases include reacting, blending, mixing, separation, digesting and drilling. These processes comprise of a number of equipment configurations as well as gas mixtures.

Working of the modern day flame arrestors

Flame arrestors or a Basket Strainer are the passive devices which do not have any moving parts. They help in preventing propagation of the flames from exposed sides of units to protected sides by using wound crimped metallic ribbons cell elements.

Construction produces matrix of the uniform openings which are constructed carefully for quenching the flames by absorbing heats of flames. This creates extinguishing barriers to ignited vapour mixtures.

Other major categories comprise of the in line flame arrestor which is also called deflagration or detonation flame arrestor. These devices are installed in the pipes for preventing the flames from getting through.

Most of the applications of flame arrestors are in the system that collect the gases emitted by solids and liquids. These systems which are used commonly in a number of industries, are known as vapour controlling systems. The gases that are vented to the atmosphere are flammable. In case such conditions are developed when ignition happens, the flames inside and outside of the controlling system may result with potential for doing catastrophic damages.

One variant of the vapour controlling system is known as vapour destruction system. It is also found in the elevated flaring system, burner, enclosed flaring system, etc.

Choosing the right in flame arrestors

Different dynamic states which have been explained earlier for the confined flames may be a little dangerous for the process system because of the tremendous energies which are related to the destination pressure as well as velocity of the flames. Things happen quite fast and may also turn catastrophic. These multiple dynamics increase the difficulty of offering flames arrestors products or the products that stop the flames and also withstand tremendous pressure which is caused due to explosion in confined piping system.
