Tips for Being an Effective Team Lead

Being named the lead of a team in your company is an exciting time. You get to head a major company project and help your team to achieve an important goal. Being a team lead isn’t just about being in charge of the project. You have to manage everyone within your group, provide guidance, and ensure that everyone is working together. For your team to succeed, you have to be an effective leader. Here are a few tips to help you manage your team and achieve the goals of your project.

Improve Your Skills

Leaders need to have a specific skill set. They need to be able to motivate their team. They need to be flexible, creative, and responsible. While you may possess leadership qualities, there’s always room for improvement. As a leader, you need to take a close look at yourself. If you see room for improvement, make the effort. Take negotiation training classes or find a mentor. The more you can improve your leadership skills, the better equipped you’ll be to manage your team.

Set an Example

As a leader, it’s important to think about what you want and what you expect from your team. Don’t just inform them of their duties and what you expect from them. Instead, model those behaviors yourself. As the lead, your team will look to you. When they see your hard work and dedication (among other essential traits), they’re more likely to act similarly.

Make Yourself Available

Don’t just make leading your team another one of your many essential responsibilities. If you’re too bogged down with several tasks, you’ll never have the time to effectively manage your team. You need to make sure that you’re available to your team to help them (and you) succeed. If you have a plate full of responsibilities already, speak with your boss about possibly renegotiating your workload so that you can give your team the attention that it deserves.

Communicate

Communication is vital for building relationships, assessing the progress of the project, and identifying and fixing issues as they arise. Not only that but open and honest communication can help to build trust with your team members. They’ll be more engaged and more likely to come to you when they need something. You can also use communication to encourage new ideas and find new solutions that you might not have thought of.

Delegate Tasks

Just because you’re the leader, that doesn’t mean you’re expected to do everything. You have a team for a reason. An effective leader doesn’t do everything for his or her team. You need to delegate tasks and trust your team members to do their jobs. If you take the time to get to know your team, you can delegate tasks to everyone’s strengths. Let everyone know what’s expected and let them do what they’re supposed to do.

Recognize Efforts

When team members go above and beyond, find a unique solution to a perplexing problem, or do something that helps to benefit the project and everyone involved, take the time to recognize their efforts. While you might not be able to provide them with a financial reward such as a raise for their hard work, verbal praise can go a long way to let team members know you notice what they’re doing and appreciative of their work. Or, if you want to get them something, consider bringing in coffee for everyone and letting them know just how much you appreciate what they’re doing.

Ask for Help

Just because you’re the team lead, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have all the answers. You may find yourself in a situation where you need help. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from your boss or other supervisors. Asking for help, rather than struggling through a difficult problem, is a strength, not a weakness.

Being a team lead is about more than just you being in charge of a major project. These tips can help you to become a more effective leader, which can help your team achieve success.
